{"id":37823,"date":"2026-02-06T08:46:38","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T21:46:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/?post_type=australianoutlook&#038;p=37823"},"modified":"2026-02-06T08:50:50","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T21:50:50","slug":"6-february-2026-the-week-in-australian-foreign-affairs","status":"publish","type":"australianoutlook","link":"https:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/australianoutlook\/6-february-2026-the-week-in-australian-foreign-affairs\/","title":{"rendered":"6 February 2026: The Week in Australian Foreign Affairs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>This week in Australian foreign affairs: Australia condemns the Taliban for suspending Embassy operations, sanctions announced in response to Iran protest suppression, the King and Queen of Denmark to visit Australia, and more. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On&nbsp;January&nbsp;30, Prime Minister&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Anthony Albanese&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pm.gov.au\/media\/visit-australia-their-majesties-king-and-queen-denmark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>announced&nbsp;Their Majesties, The&nbsp;King&nbsp;and Queen of Denmark,&nbsp;would visit&nbsp;Australia<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;from 14 to 19 March.&nbsp;<\/strong>This visit comes on the heels of increased global tensions \u2013&nbsp;most notably&nbsp;tensions between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States of America.&nbsp;Their Majesties will be accompanied by&nbsp;the&nbsp;Deputy&nbsp;Prime Minister, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, and the Minister for Climate, Energy, and Utilities. The&nbsp;Royal House of Denmark&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kongehuset.dk\/en\/press\/press-release-state-visit-to-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affirmed<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cThe purpose of the state visit is to further develop the already strong relations between Australia and Denmark, both culturally, economically, and in terms of foreign policy. A strengthened partnership with Australia is particularly important at a time when geopolitical shifts have economic and security implications that link developments in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region. Building on the strategic partnership between Australia and Denmark signed in 2023, the state visit aims to enhance cooperation across a broad range of areas, including the green transition and economic security.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On&nbsp;January 30&nbsp;the Embassy&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Canberra and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia released a joint statement condemning the&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/news\/media-release\/joint-statement-embassy-islamic-republic-afghanistan-canberra-and-department-foreign-affairs-and-trade-australia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Taliban&nbsp;and announcing the suspension of the Embassy\u2019s operations<\/strong><\/a><strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong>According to the statement: \u201cThe Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in Canberra and the Australian Government stand with the people of Afghanistan. We do not&nbsp;recognise&nbsp;the Taliban as the legitimate representatives of the Afghan people. We strongly condemn the Taliban\u2019s persistent systematic abuses of human rights \u2013 particularly against women and girls, and voices of dissent. We reaffirm our shared commitment to human rights, and the dignity of the people of Afghanistan.\u201d&nbsp;The statement went on to&nbsp;announce: \u201cIn light of the prevailing circumstances, following consultations instigated by the Australian Government, and in the context of constraints beyond the control of the Embassy, given concerns the situation was not able to continue in perpetuity, we advise that the Embassy\u2019s operations will be suspended after 30 June 2026.&nbsp;While this was not the preferred outcome, an understanding has been reached&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;an orderly and dignified transition, without prejudice to the Embassy\u2019s or the Australian Government\u2019s principled position on the situation in Afghanistan.\u201d The statement concluded by&nbsp;stating&nbsp;\u201cThe Australian Government has no intention of accepting a Taliban-appointed diplomat, Honorary Consul or other representative.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On February 2,&nbsp;the Australian&nbsp;Department of&nbsp;Defence&nbsp;announced&nbsp;the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) had deployed&nbsp;aircraft&nbsp;and aviators to Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada.<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defence.gov.au\/news-events\/releases\/2026-02-02\/air-force-deploys-nevada-exercises-united-states-united-kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The deployment is part of exercises with the United States and the United Kingdom&nbsp;entitled&nbsp;Red Flag Nellis and Bamboo Eagle 26-1<\/a>.&nbsp;These exercises will focus on&nbsp;what the&nbsp;Department&nbsp;is calling \u201chigh-intensity&nbsp;air operations\u201d&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;\u201clong-range&nbsp;missions across both land and maritime&nbsp;environments&nbsp;in the western&nbsp;United States\u201d.&nbsp;Australia will deploy up to six&nbsp;F-35A Lightning II&nbsp;aircraft, an E-7A Wedgetail, and around 227 aviators.&nbsp;Defence&nbsp;asserted \u201cAustralia\u2019s involvement in these exercises strengthens deterrence, contributes to regional security and stability, and reinforces long-standing partnerships.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On February 3,&nbsp;the&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignminister.gov.au\/minister\/penny-wong\/media-release\/targeted-sanctions-response-brutal-repression-protests-iran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Government announced&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Targeted sanctions in response to brutal repression of protests in Iran.<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>The&nbsp;imposed&nbsp;sanctions&nbsp;target&nbsp;20 individuals and 3 entities&nbsp;including senior officials and entities of Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).&nbsp;The sanctions come after weeks of protests in which the regime has massacred or arrested thousands. The&nbsp;Albanese&nbsp;Government has now sanctioned more than 200 Iranian individuals and entities, including more than 100 linked to the IRGC&nbsp;which the Australian&nbsp;Government&nbsp;lists as a state-sponsor of terrorism.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On February 3, The Australian Government welcomed the&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), H.E. Dr Hilda Heine and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Hon Kalani Kaneko.&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignminister.gov.au\/minister\/penny-wong\/media-release\/australia-deepens-cooperation-republic-marshall-islands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The visit marks a historic moment in bilateral relations and the first official visit by an RMI President in more than three decades.<\/a>&nbsp;During the visit, President Heine&nbsp;witnessed&nbsp;Foreign Ministers Wong and Kaneko sign a letter of intent for Australia\u2019s support for RMI\u2019s new Resilience and Adaptation Trust Fund.&nbsp;According to the Office of the Minister for Foreign Affairs,&nbsp;the&nbsp;Fund will&nbsp;\u201cprovide long-term financing for RMI&nbsp;to strengthen its climate change resilience, adaptation and mitigation.\u201d&nbsp;Foreign Minister Penny Wong&nbsp;stated, \u201cOur region is stronger together \u2013 Australia and the Marshall Islands have a joint commitment to a peaceful, stable and prosperous region.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>On February 4,&nbsp;Minister for Foreign Affairs and Leader of the Government in the Senate,&nbsp;Penny Wong will welcome Germany\u2019s Foreign Minister, Dr Johann&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Wadephul<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>in Canberra<\/strong>.&nbsp;The bilateral relationship between Germany and Australia is underpinned by&nbsp;an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dfat.gov.au\/about-us\/publications\/international-relations\/enhanced-strategic-partnership-between-australia-and-federal-republic-germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Enhanced Strategic Partnership<\/a>.&nbsp;The Hon Penny Wong is quoted as saying&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foreignminister.gov.au\/minister\/penny-wong\/media-release\/visit-australia-germanys-foreign-minister-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cWe are committed to strengthening our cooperation, bilaterally and with partners across our regions to build our respective and collective resilience to global challenges.\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/aiia-authors\/alexandra-desailly\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.internationalaffairs.org.au\/aiia-authors\/alexandra-desailly\/\">Alexandra Desailly<\/a> is an Australian Outlook Intern at the Australian Institute of International Affairs National Office.
